Skip Bin Hire Prices in Sydney

Most skip bin companies will not put a number on a page. This one will. Below is what skip bin hire actually costs in Sydney in 2026, drawn from operators who publish their rates openly, plus the council permit fees and extra charges that turn a cheap quote into an expensive one.

These are market ranges, not our price list. Action Bins quotes on the phone, because the honest price depends on your waste type, your access and how long you need the bin. We will match any written quote you have from another Sydney operator. The figures here are so you can tell whether a quote you have been given is reasonable.

What Sydney operators publish, by bin size

General waste, collected August 2026 from Sydney suppliers who publish prices openly.

Bin size Published Sydney range, general waste
2m3 $450 to $550
3m3 $510 to $635
4m3 $570 to $705
6m3 $690 to $990
8m3 $810 to $1,270
10m3 $1,049 to $1,300

Two things move those numbers more than anything else. The first is waste type. The second is weight.

Waste type changes the price more than size does

A 6m3 bin of grass clippings and a 6m3 bin of broken concrete are the same bin and nowhere near the same price, because they are not the same disposal problem.

  • Green waste is the cheapest stream, typically 20 to 25 per cent below general waste
  • General household waste is the baseline everything else is quoted against
  • Clean concrete and brick splits the market. Some operators price it below general waste because it recycles cleanly, others price it as heavy waste
  • Mixed heavy waste is the most expensive, because it cannot be sorted cheaply and most of it is landfilled

That last point is worth money to you. If your load is genuinely clean concrete with no timber, plastic or soil mixed through it, say so when you call. It is a different rate.

Why the levy drives the price

NSW charges a waste levy on every tonne landfilled in the Sydney metropolitan area, currently over $170 a tonne and rising each July. The transfer station pays it, and it lands in your bin price. It is the single biggest reason skip bin hire costs what it does, and the single biggest reason separating recyclable material saves you money.

Extra charges to ask about before you book

These are the ones that turn a cheap headline price into a bill you were not expecting.

Charge What the market typically charges
Going over the weight allowance Commonly $280 to $440 a tonne depending on the operator
Mattresses Usually $80 to $120 each, because they have to be pulled out and processed separately
Tyres Around $50 to $110 each, more for truck tyres
Carpet and underlay Around $60 to $80 a roll
Gas bottles and fire extinguishers Charged separately, and some operators refuse them outright
Keeping the bin longer Often free for a few days with notice, otherwise around $50 a week

Council permit fees across Sydney

If the bin goes on your driveway, none of this applies. If it goes on the road or footpath, your council decides the cost, and the spread across Sydney is remarkable.

Council What it charges
City of Sydney Nothing. Residents are exempt for up to 14 days on the roadway
Inner West Free for the first 7 days unmetered, then $148 a week
Georges River $57 application plus $130 per bin per week
Sutherland Shire $45 for 2 days, $120 for 7 days, $230 for 14 days
Mosman Charged per day, from $28 for a small bin in the first week
Randwick $200 including the first 7 days for a bin up to 3m
Bayside (Rockdale, Botany) $355 application plus daily occupancy, waived for a single dwelling up to 5 days
Willoughby $162.50 application plus $261.50 per bin for up to 3 days
Penrith $307 for the section 68 approval

Fees come from the councils’ own 2026/27 fee schedules and permit pages. They change every July, so confirm before you commit to a date. We will tell you which council you are in and what it currently charges when you call.

How to spend less on a skip bin

Five things genuinely reduce the bill, in rough order of how much they save you.

  • Put the bin on your own property and avoid the permit entirely
  • Separate clean concrete or clean green waste into its own bin
  • Break down bulky items so you use the volume you paid for
  • Take out mattresses, tyres and gas bottles before they are surcharged
  • Book the size you actually need rather than the biggest one available
Size Typical footprint Trailer loads Wheelbarrows 240L bins
2m3 1.8m x 1.5m x 0.9m 1 to 2 about 16 to 20 8
3m3 2.5m x 1.5m x 0.95m 2 to 3 about 30 12
4m3 3.2m x 1.6m x 1.0m 3 to 4 about 40 16
6m3 3.7m x 1.6m x 1.3m 5 to 6 about 60 24
8m3 4.0m x 1.6m x 1.6m 7 to 8 about 80 32
10m3 4.25m x 1.6m x 1.6m 9 to 10 100 to 120 40

Common questions

How much does a skip bin cost in Sydney?

Published Sydney prices for general waste run from around $450 for a 2m3 bin up to around $1,300 for a 10m3. Green waste is usually 20 to 25 per cent cheaper, and mixed heavy waste costs more. The size of the bin matters less than what you put in it.

Why is skip bin hire so expensive?

Most of the price is not the bin. It is the tipping fee. NSW charges a waste levy on everything landfilled in the Sydney metropolitan area, currently over $170 a tonne, and that sits on top of the transfer station's own gate fee. Add the truck, the driver and the permit and the bin itself is the cheap part.

Is it cheaper to separate my waste?

Usually yes. Clean green waste and clean concrete are recyclable and largely escape the levy, so they are disposed of far more cheaply than a mixed load. If you have a clear split, two bins can beat one.

Do I have to pay for a council permit as well?

Only if the bin goes on the road or footpath. On your own driveway or property, no permit and no permit fee. Council charges vary enormously across Sydney, from nothing in the City of Sydney to a few hundred dollars elsewhere.

What happens if I go over the weight limit?

You are charged for the excess, commonly between $280 and $440 a tonne. Soil, concrete, brick and tile are what push a bin over. If you are filling a bin with heavy material, take a smaller bin than you think you need.

Will Action Bins match another quote?

Yes. We will match any written estimate you get from another Sydney operator for the same bin and the same waste type. Call 0419 622 275 with the quote in front of you.
