Waste type changes the price more than size does
A 6m3 bin of grass clippings and a 6m3 bin of broken concrete are the same bin and nowhere near the same price, because they are not the same disposal problem.
- Green waste is the lowest cost stream because it is mulched rather than landfilled
- General household waste is the baseline everything else is quoted against
- Clean concrete and brick can be priced differently to a mixed load because it recycles cleanly
- Mixed heavy waste costs the most, because it cannot be sorted cheaply and most of it is landfilled
That last point is worth money to you. If your load is genuinely clean concrete with no timber, plastic or soil mixed through it, say so when you call. It is a different rate.

Why the levy drives the price
NSW charges a waste levy on every tonne landfilled in the Sydney metropolitan area, and it rises each July. The transfer station pays it, and it lands in your bin price. It is the biggest reason skip bin hire costs what it does, and the biggest reason separating recyclable material saves you money.
Extra charges to ask about before you book
These are the ones that turn a low headline price into a bill you were not expecting. Ask every operator about each of them.
- Going over the weight allowance
- Mattresses, which have to be pulled out and processed separately
- Tyres, including truck tyres
- Carpet and underlay
- Gas bottles and fire extinguishers, which some operators refuse outright
- Keeping the bin longer than the included hire period
Council permits
If the bin goes on your driveway, none of this applies. If it goes on the road or footpath, your council decides the process and the fee, and the rules vary a lot across Sydney. Why is skip bin hire so expensive?
Most of the price is not the bin. It is the tipping fee. NSW charges a waste levy on everything landfilled in the Sydney metropolitan area, and that sits on top of the transfer station's own gate fee. Add the truck, the driver and the permit and the bin itself is the cheap part.
Is it cheaper to separate my waste?
Usually yes. Clean green waste and clean concrete are recyclable and largely escape the levy, so they are disposed of far more cheaply than a mixed load. If you have a clear split, two bins can beat one.
Do I have to pay for a council permit as well?

What happens if I go over the weight limit?
The excess is charged separately, so ask for the weight allowance before you book. Soil, concrete, brick and tile are what push a bin over. If you are filling a bin with heavy material, take a smaller bin than you think you need.
