Construction waste is heavy, and weight is what actually costs money on a building site. Getting the streams right is worth more than getting the size right, and most of the money people waste on site bins is wasted by mixing material that did not need mixing.
Separate the heavy clean material
Clean concrete, brick and rubble recycle. They largely escape the NSW waste levy, which is currently over $170 a tonne on anything landfilled in metropolitan Sydney. The moment timber, plasterboard or plastic goes into that bin, the entire load is reclassified as mixed heavy waste and priced accordingly.
On a demolition or strip-out of any size, running two bins is normally cheaper than running one. Ask us to price it both ways.
What we take on site
Demolition waste
Brick, concrete, tile and rubble. Heavy, so size down and swap more often.
Strip-out waste
Plasterboard, timber, insulation, fittings and framing. Bulky rather than heavy, so volume is what you need.
Excavation spoil
Soil, clay and fill. Dense enough that a 3m3 or 4m3 is often the right call, however wrong that feels.
General site waste
Packaging, offcuts, broken material and the accumulated mess of an active site. An 8m3 or 10m3 on a swap cycle.

Weight, not volume, is the constraint
This is the single most common mistake on construction jobs. A bin that looks a third full of concrete can already be at its weight allowance. Excess weight is commonly charged between $280 and $440 a tonne, which turns a cheap bin into an expensive one very quickly.
The rule of thumb: if the material is dense, order small and swap often. If the material is bulky and light, order big.

Asbestos is the one to be careful about. If you are stripping a wet area or a ceiling in anything built before the late 1980s, stop and get it tested before it goes anywhere near a skip. Putting asbestos in a general bin is an offence and it is expensive for everyone involved.
Common questions
What size bin for a builder's site?
For ongoing site waste, an 8m3 or 10m3 swapped as it fills is usually the right rhythm. For heavy material like concrete and brick, go smaller. A full 6m3 of concrete is already at the weight limit of most bins.
Can I put concrete and brick in the same bin as timber?
You can, but it will cost you. Clean concrete and brick recycle cheaply. The moment timber, plastic or plasterboard goes in, the whole load becomes mixed heavy waste at the highest rate. Keep them separate and the saving is significant.
Do you take excavation spoil and soil?
Yes, in a heavy waste bin. Soil is dense, so a small bin fills its weight allowance long before it looks full. Do not order a 10m3 for dirt.
What about asbestos?
Never in a skip bin. Anything built before the late 1980s should be tested before demolition. Asbestos requires a licensed removalist and a separate disposal stream, and putting it in a general bin is an offence.
Can you swap bins on the same day?
Where our schedule allows, yes. Ongoing site work is easier for everyone if you call the day before rather than when the bin is already overflowing.
