Fees were taken from each council’s published fee schedule and permit pages in August 2026. Councils change their fees every July, so check with the council or ask us before you book. For Blacktown and some other western Sydney councils we could not verify a current fee from the council itself, so call and we will check for you.
Bin has to go on the street? Call and we will sort out what your council needs.
When you do not need a permit
- The bin sits on your driveway
- The bin sits anywhere inside your property boundary
- The bin is on a building site with its own approved site management plan
When you do
- The bin sits on the road or in a parking lane
- The bin sits on the footpath or nature strip
- The bin blocks any part of a public space
Tips that save money
Measure the driveway first. A 4m3 bin needs about 3.2 metres of clear run, plus height clearance for the truck. If it fits, the permit question disappears. See skip bin sizes for footprints.
Book only the days you need. Most councils charge by the day or the week. A clean out you can finish in a weekend should not carry a two week permit.
Use a company that already holds the approval. In councils where the approval sits with the bin company, such as Woollahra, there is nothing for you to apply for.

Common questions
Do I need a council permit for a skip bin?
Only if the bin goes on the road, footpath or nature strip. A bin on your own driveway or inside your property line does not need a council permit anywhere in Sydney.
How much is a skip bin permit in Sydney?
It depends on the council. It ranges from nothing in the City of Sydney for residents, to a few hundred dollars in councils like Bayside, Penrith and Willoughby. The table on this page lists twelve councils.
Who applies for the skip bin permit?
In some councils the bin company holds the approval, in others the resident applies. Action Bins already holds council permits for Mosman, Inner West, Randwick and Woollahra.
How long does a skip bin permit take?
From same day to two weeks. Willoughby asks for at least 10 business days notice. Book the bin and the permit together if the bin has to go on the street.
What happens if I put a skip on the road without a permit?
Council can fine you and order the bin moved. The fine is usually far more than the permit would have cost.
